Please briefly summarize your life's journey in 3-4 sentences, highlighting the significant chapters and pivotal moments.
I grew up in suburban Chicago and attended the University of Michigan, then NYU Law. I spent 20 years in big law, including on Wall Street, and was fortunate to work part-time as a partner while raising my two boys. In 2010, I started my own law firm, which has grown to 10 lawyers and three paralegals.
How many children do you have, and what are their ages?
2--25 and 22
What lessons did you learn about yourself throughout your journey?
I am not bashful about asking for what I want and am naturally a giver. I want to help everyone I meet!
How have you been able to prioritize your passion, purpose, and well-being alongside motherhood?
When I was a young law partner and had met the love of my life at 31 years old, I told the firm I was interviewing at that I intended to be pregnant as soon as possible and wanted to work part-time when I became a mom. They agreed, given my incredible background, which they knew would bring great value to the firm, and were extremely supportive when I came back 3 days a week with my first son and 2 days in the office/1 day at home with my second. This was 1998 and UNHEARD OF. Years later, when I started my own firm, I envisioned establishing a workplace that catered to individuals needing flexible hours to fulfill their roles as moms, daughters, spouses, friends, sisters, and volunteers. My goal was to create an environment where everyone could achieve a balanced life while pursuing their professional ambitions. That has come to fruition with AllRise, and it's a dream. My team is brilliant and dedicated, grateful, and happy.
How do you define self-care, and what does it look like for you?
Staying mentally and physically healthy means blocking time on my calendar for three one-hour workouts a week and weekly lunches with friends. It also means keeping up with manicures, haircuts, and Botox. I need to feel good about myself, put myself out there, and always show up for everyone.
What's the greatest Mom Hack you have learned thus far in your motherhood journey?
Compartmentalize and be present. When you are with your kids, be there with them rather than on your phone or computer working. Trust the caretakers and give your employer your full attention when you are at work.
Why do you think it's important for women to share their journeys and inspire other women?
Younger women need to know that they are not alone in feeling overwhelmed by combining parenthood and career, that there are strategies and people who can help, and that they should not feel guilty for needing some time for themselves.
